TOG NEWS SERVICE, NEW DELHI, MAY 15, 2021: INDIAN Railways on Friday said its Oxygen Express trains have delivered nearly 7,900 tonne of Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) in nearly 500 tankers to 12 States across the country.

The Railway Ministry said the specialised service, which started on April 24, has been supplying 800 tonne of LMO each day for the last few days, scaling up from their 126 tonne on their first day of operations.

Indian Railways has been "crisscrossing the country" picking up oxygen from places like Hapa and Mundra in the west and Rourkela, Durgapur, Tatanagar, Angul in the east, and then delivering it to the States of Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Telangana, Punjab, Kerala, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

"In order to ensure that oxygen relief reaches in the fastest time possible, Railways is creating new standards and unprecedented benchmarks in running of Oxygen Express Freight Trains ," said the ministry.

The average speed of the trains is kept above the 55 km per hour norm in most cases for long distances. "Running on high priority Green Corridor, with a highest sense of urgency, operational teams of various zones are working round the clock in most challenging circumstances to ensure that oxygen reaches in fastest possible time frame," it further said.

Technical stoppages have been also been reduced to a minute for crew changes over different sections to keep the trains " zipping through " the tracks.

As many as 130 Oxygen Expresses have completed their journeys thus far, offloading more than 2,934 tonne in Delhi, 2,210 tonne in Uttar Pradesh, and 1,228 tonne in Haryana
