TOG NEWS SERVICE, NEW DELHI, JUN 9, 2021: FOOD Minister Mr Piyush Goyal on Tuesday reviewed the storage plan for essential commodities and stressed on the creation of modern storage facilities at the grass root and block levels.

"The nation needs a single, technologically modern storage management infrastructure," said the minister, emphasising on the convergence and aggregation of all storage infrastructure in the country.

A " whole of the government approach " is needed rather stand-alone departmental storage plans, Mr Goyal said. For this, land aggregation for storage from States, government undertakings may be explored.

He advised greater synergy between the effective utilisation of the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and creation of modern storage infrastructure, calling for location-specific master plans and schemes, and boosting Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in the sector.

" Modern, cost efficient storage infrastructure at grass roots level and at block level is great way to increase farmers' income ," said the minister.

The government has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) for development of cold chain facility for perishable commodities, including onions through private entities.

In India, warehouses are spread over different undertakings and authorities at 20,433 locations, managed by the Railways, Food Corporation of India (FCI), Central and State Warehousing Corporations, and other departments.
